View Full Version : Is braid ban fair on white girl?

A TEENAGER HAS been suspended from school - for following the fashion for braided hair.

Olivia Acton, 13, was told that the style, as popularised by double gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes, was 'too extreme' for the strict uniform policy.

She can return to the classroom only if she unpicks her tight plaits. Two black pupils are allowed similar hairstyles which 'reflect their cultural heritage,' the school says. Olivia, from Alcrington, Manchester, has been learning at home since her hair was braided last month on a family holiday.

Her father, Michael, asked: 'How can the school discriminate between a white person having a haircut like that and a black person?'

But Middleton Technology College head teacher Allison Crompton defended her decision. 'We don't allow any extreme hairstyles of any description at the school.

'We are a high-achieving school with high standards and we don't allow any street culture into school,' she said. 'If we didn't allow some leeway for their cultural background, it would be discriminatory.'

Rochdale Council said the school should concentrate on what goes into students' heads - 'and not what is on their heads'.

This is my take on that story. Whether the style is sported by Kelly Holmes is irrelevent, she ain't in school...black kids braid their hair all the time where as white kids don't-it's more of a fashion statment. Then again it shouldn't really matter

Certain allowances are made for kids of certain races. even though it deflects from the norm of the school..muslim kids are allowed to wear their hijabs, Jehovah Witness kids don't take part in school plays, black boys and girls braid their hair, white kids don't

I remember back in Grenada one girl plucked her eyebrows, she was told to shave everything off then stay home till they grew back ( )

no i don't thinks it is fair. why do braids have to be called "street culture"? it's insulting. nobody's hair is growing into braids so it is a hair style...or like her dad called it haircut (that cracked me up). if their strict uniform policy did not state that braids are not acceptable, which it clearly did not, then i don't see the problem.

Its just braids; why are they making such a huge deal out of it?

The people in charge of that school obviously have too much free time on their hands and too little real issues to deal with if they're gonna expel a kid for braided hair. Talk about fvcked-up priorities.

Interesting...I thought white girls hair couldn't hold braids for too long. I hear these stories about their hair breaking off when they put braids in.

I dunno about their hair breaking off when they put braids on... but what I know for certain is that white women shed hair like crazy. It's almost as bad is with cats and dogs sometimes.

Unfortunately, columbine has set the trend.

Extreme conformity is now something that makes people feel comfortable.

It is a method of control... where there is the idea that if ecverybody look the same then cliques can't form and it reduces in school violence.

I think it is extreme and silly

But fear is the new theme

that's exactly what those retarded principals at bvi high school believe their strict rules will do.:shame:..... is only now deh chirren gettin out a hand. Buncha DUMB POOPS!

rules i must add, that have been in place for almost 5 years... and still no positive results. WOW... i really feel kinda better now knowing that we aint the only children that had to deal with this kinda nonsense. Giving parents bigger headaches over the way their children looked, than the headaches they get over their grades. Thas just a damn shame.:shame:

Once you dress like everyone else you feel you belong to the group.

Ever since the shootings at Columbine, there has been lots of talk as to how best to ensure that the "different kids" or the "strange kids" dont get the chance to feed their "outcast natures" and conform to some standard that the "normal kids" accept.

It is an attempt to bring military discipline into schools so that parents who fear that their "normal" kids will get "hurt by "abnormal ones".

This means no street, punk rock, metal, rap etc cultures.

Individuality is bad for some because that indviduality may mean somebody dressing in full black or having their hair in braids with gree strings and yellow beads.

Look at the uproar the Venus sisters created in the tenis world ?

same thing in schools.

Individulaity once ifferent from the "norm" is going to be challenged by those who deem themselves as the vanguard of popular.

Typical examples ... some black kids will pick on other black kids that are bright and say they re acting white if they speak "standard" english....

Thus the GODS of education feel it is best to force everyone onto a mold and not allow social and personality signiatures to stand out among individuals.

Example... hese GODS beleive that uniforms prevent the immediate distiction between rich kids and poor.

Thus poor kids won't become staturated and feel bad.

It's a style for these white girls, nothin more nothin less. If de school principles is to cut out style for whatever reason then it's their right to say it goes :nah:. That's my opinion. If she don't like it leh she take it up in court.

if it is identified as street culture style when the white girl wear it, does that mean it is okay-- even acceptable for the blacks who attend the school, to be associated with "street style"?

That is my bigger problem with this whole thing....

Also, if this is a high achievement school as they claim, then her intelligence should not fail her no matter what style she wears. Plus, it have to come out some time.

There was big scare in the US in the 1990's about
Wiggers /Wiggaz
(white niggaz)

White kids that embraced balck culture and walked talked and acted it. It was only news because the "upper class" had issues with it. Then when the fad died down it wasn't a problem. Now only poor white kids do the "wigger" thing.

And since they are poor no one cares.

Especially if they live in mostly black areas.

The only time the lager white bread society cares is when one of these poor white kids or "wiggers" makes a break like say "eminem" and has a voice... thennnnn you get problems.

My problem with those ideas is that sometimes things differ for people...

My family has friends who are a 'white' family. The father is White and the mother is 1/4 Hawaiian 3/4 White. Their first son has darker skin and straignt dark hair. The other son and daughter have dirty blonde hair and paler skin.

But the daughter hair, though straight and blonde is thick and heavy. She uses black hair products and her mother often braids her hair because it is easier that way. Also, Hawaiians often have their hair in one/two long braids...and the mother's family is still very much Hawaiian and so are the children.

How can a school tell her that she ought not to braid her hair?

^that's too technical for England  but I get your point however, I think in this case the school has acted up (as with another case where a white kid went on a holiday and came back with her hair braided) because it's not the norm for white kids to wear their hair in such intricate styles

Just to reiterate, private schools really have this notion that conformity enhances discipline. Now not to say that Mystic doesn't have a point, because I am sure that is part of it. I went through highschool like that, like shawtty described as well.

The idea is this.
If you cannot ignore your individuality for a whole. If you cannot put aside your own comfort zone to fit in with the rest of the oganism (school) then how will you fit in society ?
You are to sacrifice for the system you are part of and become one of the bees in the hive.

If you can do this and do it well, then that means you can exert discipline over your needs and wants and such a well self controlled individual is a blessing.

The military has proven that the system works 99% of the time.
