Vintage scorchers

Greetings,

If you like the old school, you'll enjoy these two releases...but I do mean old
school...number one, check "Rookumbine" out on K&K compact disc. It makes a
very nice companion to the excellent "Boogu Yagga Gal" collection. Number two,
if it's r&b and ska you like, then definitely check Trojan's "Independent
Jamaica" compact disc. While there are a few tracks that can be found on other
earlier Trojan compilations, I have not ever seen great tunes like 'Hurricane
Hattie' by Jimmy Cliff, 'Going Crazy' by the Continentals, 'When You Walk' by
Lloyd Flowers and Rico, and 'I'm Free' by Jimmy Cliff on compact disc until
now. And you also get...26 hot tunes in all.
Trojan/Sanctuary yet again has come out with a very quality release here,
nicely packaged, and very good sound quality on all tracks. Whoever is behind
the current Trojan re-issue program deserves a big thumbs up. At least in
terms of finally letting this material seeing the light of day...who knows if
Trojan deserves a thumbs up yet for appropriately compensating the correct
people for the music it keeps releasing.
Anyways, these two discs are real nice, and you can grab them easily from
Robert at Nattyrebel@mindspring.com.
One final question...on the 'Independent Jamaica' CD, the tune "I Care" is
credited to Derrick Harriott and the Vagabonds. Now, on the 'Donkey Years' CD
on Jamaican Gold label this same tune is credited to Derrick Harriott and the
Jiving Juniors. Which credit is correct? Who were the Vagabonds?
peace,
dave

If it's a vocal group sound, it would be the Jivin Juniors, Vagabonds
I think is the back up band.

i wonder if Jackie Mittoo and/or Monty Alexander were not involved with the
Vagabonds at some early point.

the vagabonds were a more mainstream vocal group, they recorded doo wop, but
also some nice ska tunes under the name Jimmy James & The Vagabonds (a cd was
released a few years back), i wonder if there didn't exist some sort of link
between them and the Vikings band, but far from sure !

Re: Vintage scorchers

Speaking of Vagabonds, I followed Filthy Rich's link to Daddy Kool's rarities
albums, and there's a listing for an LP titled, if I remember it correctly,
"Jamaica's Original Vagabonds", which may or may not be the group in question.
Or it may have nothing whatsoever to do with the group in question. At any
rate, the price was somewhere around 60 pounds, maybe higher. Definitely not
in my budget.
peace,

"Skatime" by Jamaica's Own Vagabonds. The one listed appears to be a
reissue as it is dated 1969. My copy is from 1964 on Decca. The album
was recorded on their visit to the UK and is nothing special, although
it's includes what is probably the only ska version of "The Happy
Wanderer"!

Interesting sleeve notes state that while here (UK) they twice appeared
on BBC1's "Tonight" programme, in May 1964. They also appeared on a BBC2
programme called "Time Out", devoted to blue beat music.

Band line-up:
bandleader, bass guitar, founder - Colston Chen
lead guitar - Wallace Wilson
2nd guitar - Philip Chen
drums - Winston (Sparrow) Martin
tenor & alto sax - Carl (Grog) Griffith
organ & piano - Carl (Breadback) Noel
percussion - Rupert (Bally) Balgobin
vocalist, m/c, entertainer - Count "Prince" Miller
vocalist - Jimmie James

Jimmy James & the Vagabonds became a popular soul music band in the
late 60's and early 70's playing the UK college and disco circuits,
similar to Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band etc.

Re: Vintage scorchers

Unfortunately, quite a few of these tracks duplicate the "Boogu Yagga
Gal" set. Too bad because there is certainly enough unreleased mento
out there that you'd think they could have found some fresher tracks
to reissue.
